FAQs About Acne

Acne is an irritating condition suffered by people from all walks of life. Below are some of the most common questions about acne.

What Exactly Causes Acne?

Typically, it is due to one of four basic things: clogged pores or hair follicles, inflammation, bacteria, or overproduction of oil. However, there are other factors that can interact with these main causes to trigger or worsen acne.

I’ve Heard Stress Can Cause Acne Breakouts. Is That True?

Stress can undoubtedly trigger acne breakouts. When you get stressed, there is an increase in certain hormones, including cortisol, which causes the body to increase oil production. This excess oil can lead to acne.

Is Acne Genetic?

If your parents have or had an issue with acne, it doesn’t automatically mean you will deal with breakouts all of the time. It does, however, mean that you are at a higher risk of developing acne than someone whose parents did not have the issue.

I Thought Acne Was a Teenager’s Issue. Why Am I Breaking Out?

While acne is more often seen in teenagers, there’s a reason for this. The hormonal balance at that age is on a rollercoaster ride, which has a direct connection to excess oil production and inflammation – two common causes of acne. Unfortunately, though, acne can occur at any age.

Should I Avoid Makeup or Lotion With Acne?

Not necessarily. Cosmetics typically don’t cause acne, unless there is a specific ingredient in the type of product you use that affects your skin. Generally, if you wash your face regularly, you shouldn’t have a problem. If you do, consider trying a different brand.

At What Point Should I See a Dermatologist?

Seeing a dermatologist once a year is good practice for everyone. If you suffer from acne between visits that won’t go away with gentle cleansing and regular care products, it’s time to schedule an appointment.
