Dermal Fillers FAQs

Aging is an irreversible factor of life, but losing your youth doesn't have to be! Dermal, or "derma," fillers provide a youthful appearance through a variety of formulated injections, effectively avoiding any incisions and a required, long-term healing period. Our team of dermatologists at Southwest Dermatology in Pasadena and Houston, TX, have provided answers to some common questions you may have about dermal fillers!

What are dermal fillers?

As a result of lost tissue volume of the skin, dermal fillers are often administered to replenish the skin by reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Popular fillers (e.g. Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero) are typically derived from hyaluronic acid (i.e. HA, a sugar molecule that naturally occurs in the cells of the skin) which hydrates our skin.

In short, different dermal fillers utilize various active components to confront areas of concern. Meaning, one type of filler won't provide the answer to improve the appearance of every single skin concern.

How do dermal fillers work?

Fillers are injected into the skin with a tiny needle to target areas of the face that have experienced tissue loss, restoring the volume and the structural integrity.

Common facial areas typically include:

  • the lips—to reshape or create symmetry
  • the cheeks—to offer a more defined appearance
  • the nose—to refine the shape and profile
  • the chin—to improve appearance and proportions

The small needle used for injections offers the absolute precision required for dermal fillers, however, this may leave you with a lingering question:

Is the procedure painful?

Many patients often describe the filler injection to feel like a quick pinch, only causing minimal discomfort. At Southeast Dermatology in Pasadena and Houston, TX, our team of dermatologists is happy to offer a topical anesthetic to ease any nerves before receiving dermal fillers. Additionally, several of our fillers are already formulated with anesthetic components.

What are some benefits of dermal fillers?

The greatest, and most visible, the benefit of dermal fillers is the overall improved appearance—relaxing the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles (e.g. smile lines, crow's feet, etc.). Fillers are incredibly effective in correcting tissue loss, as well as offering a boost of confidence.

When can I expect to see results?

You'll be able to notice immediate effects of the dermal fillers, but the full effects will continue to improve 2-4 weeks after treatment. Some patients may experience bruising or swelling, but overall, dermal fillers are incredibly safe.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Depending on the type of filler, quantity, the area treated, etc., you can expect dermal fillers to last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Even though filler treatment isn't permanent, you can see long-lasting effects by maintaining regular treatments.
